The Two Things I Never Expected To Be Connected

WARNING: spoiler’s ahead.

Having lived in the Philippines the past four years, I must admit I’ve been behind on my Doctor Who episodes. However, I’ve spent this past month catching up on my ultra favourite TV show and I can’t say how happy I am to be finally up to date. I’ve just finished the seventh episode (A Good Man Goes to War) of Season Six, and after this post I’m going to watch the next one (Let’s Kill Hitler).

What happened in A Good Man Goes to War is basically this:

Amy is held captive on Demon’s Run and the Doctor assembles an army of allies to recover her. Meanwhile, River reveals her greatest secret to the Doctor.

— summary from Wikipedia

River’s greatest secret, apparently, is that she’s the daughter of Amy and Rory. She’s also part-Time Lord, seeing as she was conceived the TARDIS on her parent’s wedding night (see The Big Bang) allowing her DNA to be altered. It’s very spacey wacey, so I’m not going to talk about that any more… what I am going to talk about, on the other hand, is the situation between Melody/River and the Doctor.

I can’t really fault Steven Moffat for this, seeing as the idea has been introduced more sophisticatedly way back since Season Four when David Tennant was still the Doctor, but I can’t help but connect the idea of River Song/ Melody Pond and the Doctor being together with Twilight, specifically Breaking Dawn.

Am I the only one who sees this? I know Twilight has a bad reputation for being shallow and, well, shallow, but I’m still a fan and my mind has somehow connected the book saga to the television series.

Here’s a table for you to understand:

Doctor Who (2011)

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (2008)

River/Melody is Rory and Amy’s daughter

Renesmee is Edward and Bella’s daughter

Amy has had the hots for the Doctor

Jacob was Edward’s rival for Bella’s affections

Amy and the Doctor kissed

Jacob and Bella kissed

The Doctor didn’t like Amy ‘that way’

Bella preferred Edward than Jacob

The Doctor knew River/Melody as a baby

Jacob imprinted on Renesmee when she was a baby

River and the Doctor like each other

Renesmee and Jacob like each other

See where I’m getting at? There are so many parallels, it’s uncanny! And I can’t help but think that maybe the reason Amy was besotted with the Doctor is somehow the same as to why Jacob liked Bella so much. There were both unborn partners involved! The Doctor with River and Jacob with Renesmee! (This is just a wild theory, by the way…  not to be taken seriously.)

On another note, there’s a small, small part of me wondering whether Moffat cheated or not, or perhaps Stephenie Meyer had a dream about this. Either way, I don’t really mind. I just like connecting dots, is all… ^__^

If you could be part of any fictional universe, what would it be?

Well, it’s simply been a long time since I’ve answered a prompt (excluding Photo Challenges) and I’m really excited about this one, simply because my life pretty much revolves around fictional universes. Take the last few days, for example: from the moment I wake up until the moment I sleep, I’ve been reading Harry Potter fan fictions, watching old Doctor Who episodes and just last night, the last train of thought I had before slipping into dreamland was “Doubt thou the stars are fire…”

This prompt opens a whole load of possibilities for me: I would enjoy travelling back in time with the Doctor in the TARDIS. I would love to hang out with Percy, Annabeth and Grover and battle some monsters. It would be a dream come true to be able to bend an element and have fun with the Gaang, fly with Eragon on Saphira’s back, wear a medieval dress and go to King Arthur’s court…

But I think, most of all, I would love to step into J.K Rowling’s magical world, to attend Hogwarts for the next seven years, get Sorted into Ravenclaw (if I do say so myself), and fly on broomsticks and just cause general mayhem.

It would be a very unique — not to mention jaw-dropping — experience to actually meet face-to-face the Golden Trio and the Weasley family. I would go all Colin Creevey on them and take millions of pictures and ask question after question after question… I’d probably annoy Harry, but oh well.

Aye, there’s the rub.

Connecting Dots Because You Have Nothing Else Better To Do

So I was watching Doctor Who today (which I seem to be doing a lot these days), when I realized that Never Let Me Go actors Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan both starred in at least one episode in Season 3. Andrew played a New Yorker named Frank and was in Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, while Carey was in Blink as Sally Sparrow.

It’s a small world after all, eh? I believe those to stars rose to fame because of Doctor Who, though my theory has a ninety percent chance of just being hogwash. But it’s nice to dream, yeah?

Eat ‘Em Up, Twi-Hards!

So apparently, Summit Entertainment released some new stills of the upcoming Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn (Part 1). I have to say though, despite my decreasing interest on the franchise, the small part of me that’s still a Twi-hard is jumping up and down in sheer excitement. I can’t wait for the movie!

I quite like the one picture with Edward’s arm around Bella. (They’re wedding rings stand out like beacons, don’t they?) *Sigh* They just seem so happily married, you wouldn’t think that their marital bliss would be shattered in the form of  half-human, h}alf-vampire baby.

What do you think of these new pictures?

“Full Size Me!” says the Breaking Dawn, Part 1 Cast Poster

And this is what we get:

Personally, I quite like the other poster better, though that might be due to the fact that I think the cast here were Photoshopped too much. Well, that and this seems entirely too cluttered than the peaceful ‘breaking dawn’ that was in the first poster.

But never mind me; everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, and sometimes I do think that I’m an old lady stuck in a young girl’s body. Strange, but there you go. ^__^

Oh, and if you’re interested… ;D

Celebrity Crush of the Moment: Dougray Scott

Featured

Knowing me and my slight obsession with stories set in history, it’s no wonder I’m making this post right now. I watched Ever After on TV last night and not only did I realize that it’s one of the movies I’ll never see myself tire from watching, but I also realized that Prince Henry look positively dashing.

Dougray Scott in his role as Prince Henry

Of course, being a crown prince and all, he had to be positively dashing. And charming. And sinfully good-looking wearing his costume.

Yes, I know that I’m gushing way too much over Dougray’s character, Prince Henry, and not enough on Dougray himself. I’m sorry — I can’t help it! I’ve searched up Dougray Scott on Google Images, but all I got was of him with short hair and modern clothes…. well, except for that one with the kilt. I am aware that expecting Dougray to look and dress like what he did on Ever After is kind of irrational, but what can I say? He looked dashing. I dunno if it’s the way Prince Henry looked or just the way the film was shot, but honestly: wow.

Here’s an excerpt from the movie when the prince proposes to Danielle (Cinderella). It’s quite romantic, if I do say so myself.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

I never actually planned on watching Captain America: The First Avenger, nor did I ever give that movie much thought beyond the ‘that main guy looks a lot like Channing Tatum’ and ‘why is that poster doing on a double-decker bus?’

As it turns out, the “main guy” — I’d rather use protagonist, just to be more technical — is actually played by Chris Evans. Yeah, he was also the guy who played Jessica Alba’s brother in Fantastic Four.

As for the poster on the double decker bus, that’s just me wondering why something quintessentially British would do something like that. In their defence, though, they do have some Harry Potter posters. I particularly like the one with Ron and Hermione cuddled together.

But back to Captain America. After Spiderman, Superman, Batman and other superhero comic books turned into movies, I don’t think Marvel needed to release another one. I don’t want to insult any fans, but the movie was pretty boring. For me, anyway. I have to admit there were some high points, most of them were the comic relief, though I can’t guarantee all of them were laugh worthy. Half of the time, I was just laughing because what I was watching was so absurd… The funniest part though was when Steve managed to get the flag from the top of the pole. It was very Mulan-esque.

I kinda lost interest when Skinny Steve was replaced by Steroid Steve, but I got interested again when all the showgirls began dancing. As food for thought, however, has anyone wondered how Steve managed to be familiar enough with his new buffed up body to chase a Hyrda agent after just recently being changed? Doesn’t he need to get used to the new muscles or something?

Moving on… I watched the movie in 3D, so the visual effects were eye-popping. Steve, as Captain America, likes to throw his shield around and I must say I always jump when said shield leaves the screen and comes at you.

Plot-wise, I see that The First Avenger is a prequel and everything, but I really, really wanted Steve to die after crashing into the snow. It would’ve made the disappointment between him and Agent Peggy Carter more heartbreaking. But hey, letting him sleep seventy years and therefore missing that date they had works just as well. Seems kinda silly though, don’t you think?

I recommend watching the movie if you’re really into superheroes and the whole perseverance thing — one day, even you can help save your country from a red-skinned monster. If you’re not that big a fan of comics, then I suggest watching the movie in 3D; it’s more interesting that way. *shrugs* That’s what I did, anyway, and I only yawned about five times. Beats nearly sleeping when watching Transformers: The Dark of the Moon.

Breaking Dawn, Part 1 Cast Poster

Comic-Con is coming up, and the Twilight Saga franchise has released a new poster featuring all the major cast: Bella and Edward (of course), Jacob, and the rest of the Cullen family.

With the Harry Potter fever the last few months, I must admit that not once have I spared a thought for the upcoming Twilight movie. Honestly? I’m not even excited for this; not anymore, at least.

Compared to Deathly Hallows 2, Breaking Dawn 1 just won’t cut it. Perhaps I’m just a bigger Pothead (a nickname “affectionately” used by my old classmates) than I am a Twi-hard. Perhaps it’s just that the EVENT THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING. does not compare to THE EPIC CONCLUSION OF THE WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON.

Word-wise, the Deathly Hallows trailer used epic, conclusion and phenomenon. The toughest word the Breaking Dawn trailer used was everything. I dunno… I suppose this is just me channelling my geekiness.

Oh, and don’t get me started on how overly Photoshopped that poster above is. I think apart from Lautner, everyone else is wearing a wig. Even Rathbone (Jasper). It’s creeping me out a little bit.

The End of an Era

That’s it. Wala na. No more movies.

The era of Harry Potter has ended.

To quote a friend of mine: “I watched Deathly Hallows, Part 2! …What do I do with my life now?” Yes, fans will still continue to read the books, watch the movies and just basically obsess over the entire world of Harry Potter, but you can’t deny that something wonderful and special just ended. There would be no more talks of I can’t wait for the next movie; instead there would be reminisces and Did you remember those seven books/eight movies about that kid with glasses?

If you couldn’t guess, I watched the movie tonight… well, today if you’re picky, since the movie elapsed well into the next morning. I’m not gonna talk about the technicalities of the movie just yet — that is reserved for another post (well, maybe), after I watch the movie a second time — since I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that THE MOVIES ARE OVER.

I cried bawled buckets of tears. My nose was running like an open faucet and my tears were falling like one of nature’s waterfalls. And I think I annoyed my family with my sobs and sniffles and random whispers about the movie/book… *cringe*

Off the top of my head, here are the comments I have of the movie:

  • Helena Bonham Carter did wonderfully playing a Polyjuiced Hermione — she even got the eyebrows thing Emma does when acting!
  • Alan Rickman did wonderfully too. I never did feel for Snape… I mean, I know I should because he’s been practically living his entire life with a broke heart. And I do feel for him, actually; just a little bit. But Alan’s portrayal — whoa. I cried. As in the tears came flowing freely.
  • The scene at the King’s Cross Station was cheesy, and in my opinion the lowest point of the movie. Perhaps it was the lack of glasses for both Harry and Dumbledore. Perhaps it was the fact that it was just so white, or maybe it was because I was too preoccupied staring at Daniel Radcliffe and wondering how big his head was compared to his shoulders… ^__^
  • I don’t think Ron and Hermione’s kiss wouldn’t be voted best kiss for the MTV Movie Awards because they didn’t even show the lip-locking. It’s a bit disappointing, since Emma and Rupert have been talking about how awkward it was to shoot. On the plus side, it wasn’t as disappointing as Harry and Ginny’s kiss.
  • Ginny’s whisper of “I know” to Harry after their kiss is worth mentioning, though. It’s just so Ginny, I’m willing to forgive Bonnie’s acting for it.
  • The best scene of the movie was Neville cutting of Nagini’s head. Matthew Lewis really did steal the show for me.
  • Despite Ron and Hermione being love interests, I can’t help but keep noticing the chemistry between Hermione and Harry — or I suppose Emma and Daniel. Near the ending when the Trio were holding hands, Hermione was closer to Harry than to Ron, her boyfriend.
  • And my most anticipated scene of the entire movie, THE EPILOGUE, was quite disappointing. I dunno, I just expected more. It was still nice, though.
All right, I’m off to cry some more now. Oh, and did I  mention that I watched the movie in 3D? Yeah, it was awesome.
