Wrocking and Trocking

No, these are not the names of dwarfs, believe me.

Before I can go crazy and gush about how awesome WROCK and TROCK are, let me first explain what they are about.

Wrock, short for Wizard Rock, is an indie music movement in which people write and perform songs inspired by the Harry Potter book series. It is a growing fandom within a fandom, with hundreds of bands around the world, many of whom tour and produce CDs. Wizard rock began as a Myspace phenomenon, but it is receiving recognition as a legitimate genre that spans all styles of music.

Trock, short for Time Lord Rock,

is a wave of music started by YouTube partner Nerimon and his band Chameleon Circuit. Styles of music can vary from hard-rock to acoustic, but the underlying theme is the adventures of Doctor Who, or, most recently, the Tenth Doctor, as portrated by David Tennant.
Trock is a musical wave similar to Wizard Rock and mirrors the idea that fans of the series can create musical fusion in their bedrooms with just a guitar or keyboard, and then post it on YouTube.

Too long, didn’t read? Bottom line: while they are not officially a genre of music yet, they are definitely a part of the fandoms just like conventions and fan art and fan fiction. This is fan music.

I discovered wrock before trock and fell in love with The Ministry of Magic. They’re music remind me of some kind of techno/pop/dance fusion except, of course, the songs are about Harry Potter… though, there are some songs that are so vague they can be “normal” songs. Ha, but the Pottergeek in me just can’t help but see it as a Harry Potter fan song. I mean, I already do see Harry Potter references in “normal” songs given the fangirl that I am, so yeah.

It’s a lost cause.

Trock, on the other hand, took some time to take a hold on me. Personally, I blame the fact that I listened to the wrong bands. Now? I’m currently listening to Chameleon Circuit, specifically “Kiss The Girl” — really, how can you not like the line “monkeys, monkeys, monkeys…” It’s so random if Continue reading

Weekly Photo Challenge: Sun

Well, this is awkward.

No matter how much of an oxymoron it is, for the past few days or so there has been sporadic raining so consistent I swear every time I look out the window or just up, I see raindrops falling. And yes, that makes it just a tad trickier to get a picture of the sun. So instead, I’m going to let you all use your imagination and simply provide the inspiration for a made up sun — that is, say hello to the Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun”!!

Honestly, apart from that song “rain drops are falling on my head” this song has been a constant thrumming at the back of my mind. It’s quite annoying, actually, but what the hell. It’s the Beatles.

Enjoy!

(By the way, I’m trying out this whole embed Spotify into a post thing so my apologies if that does not work. Here’s a YouTube link for your troubles.)

Retrospection — Has it really been 12 months?

This is definitely a surreal experience. I can’t believe I forgot about this but, believe it or not nine days ago last year was the very first time I’ve posted in this humble blog of mine. Yes, it’s my blog’s anniversary — or I suppose, blogoversary.

Whoo! Bring out the champagne, people!

Er, make that alcohol-free champagne...

So much has changed in just a span of twelve months — I mean, just twelve measly monthsReally? Last year, I was in a completely different country, living a completely different life with no clue what to do with my life. Albeit, I have no idea what to do with my life now, at least I’m that little bit closer to finding a purpose.

This blog — the internet in general — has been a constant presence in my life, it surprises me now to think that I could simply look back on past posts to remind myself of my thoughts and feelings on certain subjects half a year ago. So much has changed, it’s simply quite unreal.

Of course, I could have never gotten this far without you, my dear readers. You have no idea how much I appreciate your presence, and even though I feel like I’m ‘talking’ to thin air most of the time, I know you guys are there… reading, listening, watching (and not in a creepy way, mind you). So yes, thank you so much, because those little “likes” and comments and subscriptions make my day.

he novelty of this blogging thing has still not faded away; I still smile like a hopeless idiot every time I get an email notifying me that someone new has “followed” this blog. I doubt that feeling will ever fully leave. Please keep reading, and have some ice cream on me! You know I’m having some right now!!

Over and out.

Caine’s Arcade (Or, What A Kid Could Do With Cardboard Boxes, Imagination and Perseverance)

The answer to that question is this: $74,665.

So apparently some little kid in East LA spent his summer vacation building an arcade from just cardboard boxes and Scotch tape. Sound interesting? You bet your bottom dollar it is! Watch the video below to find out more:

Seeing Caine impact so much people by doing what he loved — and being such a kid about it! — simply brings me to get in touch with my emotions (buried deep, deep under rubble) and just go “Awww…” :3 <— see that? That’s a cutsie face. That’s what I looked like watching this documentary.

I remember when I was a kid (well, more of a kid than I am now), I used to climb into cardboard boxes and pretend I was travelling from country to country and saying hi to various family members and friends. I can also recall, very vividly, packing a rucksack and imagining that the stairs connecting the first floor to the second floor was some sort of mountain and climbing up would mean I was scaling a dangerous forest terrain… And then I’d grab the laundry basket, plop myself inside, and slide back down the stairs.

Ahh, fun times. Fun times.

If I try sliding down the stairs now, I’d most likely get a broken bone than a thrilling experience of sledging down the Alps. To be a kid again, eh? The world was limitless. For a child, you can do anything you want without leaving the safety of your den — in Caine’s case, his father’s shop.

So good on ya, Mr Caine! You’re a genius and a mighty inspiration for those who forgot the real meaning of fun. Who needs TV when you can have a cardboard box?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Journey

Image

I was going to put up a picture of the rock band Journey for a laugh, but then changed my mind because I didn’t feel like I deserve it (my only experience with it being from the first season of Glee). So… earwig oh!

This is why I enjoy window seats - no, my brother did not beat me to the aisle seat -_-'

Oh, and I apologize for the totally lame ‘earwig’ joke.

The Complete and Utter Insanity of Simply Being

I am so completely and utterly depressed right now, I don’t even have the heart — or the energy — to get off of my backside, go to the fridge and fish out the ice cream.

It all started three days ago (well, I think it was three days ago) when I had this idea that I should make a fan video based on my fandoms. It’s the Easter holidays, I have basically two weeks of doing absolutely nothing and I. AM. BORED. So I started the video and it turns out all the programs I tried out didn’t come close as being as awesome as iMovie.

So yeah, I’m ruined by my school’s superior software.

After I decided to give that particular project up, I know need to do something else… but for the life of me I have no idea what to do!!

  • I want to get out of the house but it’s such gloomy weather out.
  • I’d ask my friends to hang out with me but I know they’re busy with their own lives.
  • There’s coursework that need finishing, but who does that an entire week before school begins again?

I wish I could do something to make life memorable. You know that saying YOLO, you only live once? (No, I have checked and it does not mean you obviously like oreos.) Well, given that I know I shouldn’t be wasting my time like this, but… look what I found on Tumblr! Ha!

RPG, you are beautiful surrounded by these pretties. You help to alleviate the ache in my heart :’)

Oh No!

I got a new music fix.

And I first encountered it when I looking through YouTube for Sherlock fanvids, so see? Something good does come out of being a Sherlock fangirl.

*ahem*

Okay, without further ado I bring you “Oh No!” by Marina and the Diamonds featured in this awesome-tastic Sherlock video made, I presume, some time after the first season. (Please don’t be shocked by all the pink.)

It’s seriously one of my favorite songs right now, it’s not even funny. I’ve listened to it so much I’ve been banned from listening to it in Spotify, and so I’m making do with YouTube -_-‘ Anyway, as long as I can sing aloud and dance to it, I’m happy.

Sort of. Because this song is so true to me I can’t help but think think think (did anyone see Winnie the Pooh there or was it just me?) about how it speaks about my own personality… So good on ya, Miss Marina. You made me feel normal which, admittedly, is a rare thing.

Over and out.

Celebrity Crush of the Moment: Rosamund Pike

Featured

Because I am in love with her versatility.

Just this afternoon I watched ‘Wrath of the Titans‘ with a friend and saw that Rosamund Pike plays Andromeda, and if my memory serves me right Andromeda is the princess whom Perseus saved, and had a crush on him in the first Titans movie. She then becomes queen and transforms the character for me from damsel-in-distress to a total badass warrior.

I first encountered Rosamund Pike’s work in one of my treasured films, Pride and Prejudice. There she played Elizabeth Bennet’s elder sister, Jane Bennet (she marries the charming Mr. Bingley).

The stark contrast between the two characters she played totally astounded me. I mean, P&P is generally aimed at women and Titans at men, so the two works are as different as they come — one is a satire for Austenian society, the other a Greek epic. Jane is an introvert who is sometimes overshadowed by Elizabeth, while Queen Andromeda led an army against Kronos.

Suffice to say, I’m left thinking that Rosamund Pike is one helluva BAMF* to transform herself like that. Of course, I’ve seen her in action before in one of those James Bond movies… I think it was the one with Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry? Can’t be sure right now.

So yeah. She’s definitely becoming one of those actors/actresses that I would blindly watch their movie for, despite not knowing anything about it beforehand. She’s cool.

Over and out.

*For those who are unfamiliar with internet slang, BAMF is an acronym for something I’m too shy to fully type out. Try Googling it? :P
